About the EdTech Directory

The NCADEMI EdTech Directory (“directory”) provides accessibility information on common K-12 educational technology (edtech) products. In the context of the directory, “accessibility” refers to how well a product works for users with disabilities. Specifically, we focus on information about conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) as specified by Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (read a primer on ADA Title II and WCAG). The directory is a resource for state and local educational agencies seeking to improve accessibility considerations in the edtech procurement process. It can be used by K–12 educators, administrators, procurement staff, and anyone who wants to better understand accessibility information about edtech products.

What accessibility information does the EdTech Directory include?

The directory includes publicly available information about the digital accessibility of a product. Often, this information is provided in an Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR) made available by the product’s vendor. Accessibility information may also include support and resources published by the vendor or a third party.

When a product is added to the directory, the vendor is notified and given an opportunity to review the accessibility information listed. Vendors are asked to confirm and provide any additional public-facing accessibility information that consumers would find useful.

Does the EdTech Directory rate the accessibility of products?

No, the directory does not provide ratings or otherwise include comments on a product’s accessibility beyond the publicly listed information. At this time, NCADEMI does not test or conduct accessibility evaluations of edtech products.

How does NCADEMI identify the products to include in the EdTech Directory?

The directory initially launched with commonly used K-12 edtech products identified through a variety of public sources. We are continually working to expand and update the directory, and products may be added by request.

How can I use the information in the EdTech Directory?

The directory provides educational agencies a central location of publicly available accessibility information about edtech products. This searchable database is designed to increase access to comprehensive information about the digital accessibility of edtech products, reducing staff time and effort. NCADEMI offers guidelines for including accessibility in edtech procurement to be used in conjunction with the EdTech Directory.

NCADEMI continues to develop resources to support procurement teams. Do you have a request for a specific resource? Contact us.
